The JAG Association is a non-profit organization for people with multiple severe disabilities, one of which involves intellectual functioning. The association works to strengthen self‑determination, equality, and the right to independent living.
Since April 2023, Ida Westerlund has served as the Chair Woman of the Association.

What we do
We work to ensure that our members can live their lives to the fullest, on their own terms, with the best possible personal assistance.
This means we engage in everything from advocacy work aimed at decision-makers to fun events where we can spend time together and experience new things.
Examples of what the Association does:
-
carries out policy and advocacy work
-
raises awareness of discrimination and structural barriers
-
promotes alternatives to institutional and group‑based living
-
works to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities are heard in decision‑making

Advocacy for independent living and self-determination
Ideologically, JAG is part of the Independent Living movement and is based on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities are subjects of their own lives – not objects of care.
The association has been instrumental in developing what is often referred to internationally as the JAG model – a way of organising personal assistance that safeguards self‑determination even when a person cannot manage support arrangements independently.
This work is closely linked to:
-
Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
-
the right to choose where and with whom to live
-
opposition to unnecessary institutionalisation
