The JAG Association works to promote self‑determination, personal assistance, and equality for people with disabilities in Finland (J – Equality, A – Assistance, G – Community).
The association’s work is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in particular Article 19 – the right to live independently and to be included in the community.
Objectives of the JAG Association
- Increase awareness of personal assistance as a tool for independent living. Group housing must not be the only option for people with intellectual disabilities.
- Ensure that people with complex and intellectual disabilities have the right to decide where and with whom they live.
- Ensure that personal assistance is provided on the user’s own terms.
- Promote social structures that support participation, not discrimination.
- Replace institution‑based solutions with individualized alternatives.
- Strengthen the voice of people with disabilities in decision‑making processes.
The association works in practice with:
- Legal advice, advocacy, and information for members
- Knowledge sharing in various forums on personal assistance, self‑determination, and Article 19 of the UN Convention
- Advocacy work directed at decision‑makers to promote the implementation of Article 19
- Community and peer support (JAG – Equality, Assistance, Community), including events and meetings
- National and international networking within the disability sector (e.g. KVANK, Disability Rights Forum)
